Ishikawa Goemon (* 16th century; - 10 August 1594) is a Japanese folk hero. Like Robin Hood, he is said to have robbed the wealthy and given to the poor. To this day, many myths and legends surround him, for example about an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Toyotomi Hideyoshi, after which he was sentenced and executed alive together with other relatives by boiling oil. He is said to have heroically attempted to save his son by keeping him out of the cauldron.
This subject is also addressed by John Lee Goemon Katana. The tsuba depicts Goemon at the time of his execution, according to a woodblock print by Toyokuni Ichiyoai. Among other motifs, his name written in Japanese script also appears on the fuchi.
