How to Choose Boxing Gloves
When choosing boxing gloves, pay attention to:
Type of Gloves
Training — also known as bag gloves, suitable for mitts, punching bags and trainers. These are thinner gloves that give you closer contact with the bag.
Competition/sparring — designed for bouts and sparring; they have more internal padding and thus better absorb impacts. In our range you will find various models of sparring gloves from manufacturer Katsudo.
Size
Boxing glove size is given by weight in (OZ) ounces. The number of ounces refers to the weight of each glove, indicating how much internal padding lies between the hand and the punching bag/opponent. The higher the number, the greater the hand protection, but also the slower the punch speed. This is why most beginners choose lighter gloves, as they do not yet have the skills and strike only lightly and slowly. For stronger punches you will need more reinforced gloves to avoid unnecessary injury. Preferences may vary, however, so it is always best to consult glove size with a trainer.
Boxing gloves weigh approximately 8 oz to 16 oz, with 1 oz being approximately 28 g.
- Gloves under 10 oz — most suitable for women, children and juniors
- 10 oz — used in competitions and professional bouts
- More than 10 oz — mainly used in training
Manufacturer Katsudo recommends size 8 oz for children and women, and 10 oz and above for men. Competitive boxers most often choose 10 oz.
Fit
If you have the opportunity to try the gloves on, the ideal fit is snug but not too tight. The fingertips should touch the top of the gloves. You should also be able to make a fist. It is recommended to try gloves on with boxing hand wraps, which protect the joints and fill the excess space between the hand and glove.
Care and Maintenance of Boxing Gloves
If you want your gloves to last as long as possible, you need to follow a few important rules.
- Store them in a dry environment
- Do not expose to prolonged sunlight
- Treat with suitable products designed for leather
- Do not dry directly on a radiator etc.
- Gloves are not recommended to be washed in a washing machine or scrubbed with bristle brushes
