The ACME Thunderer whistle is one of the most widely used referee whistles in the sporting world – among others in the NHL, NBA and UEFA. It is made from solid brass and has a freely moving "pea", which produces a sound that can be heard above the strongest wind or background noise. For this reason it is often used on beaches (Baywatch), by rescue teams and as an outdoor communication device.
