Birdie is a compact, simple belay device with assisted braking for belaying a lead climber or via "top-rope" (on a fixed anchor). The entire BEAL Birdie construction is metal. Internal connecting parts + dynamic cam and friction hammer are stainless steel for increased durability. The rope passes through the axis of the belay device – there is therefore no rope twist during friction over an edge, as is the case with other manufacturers.

BEAL Birdie is compatible with single dynamic ropes from 8.5 mm (BEAL Opera) to 10.5 mm (BEAL TopGun). The most suitable rope diameter for comfortable belay operation is 9–10 mm. Once the rope is threaded, it is secured with a connecting carabiner. During operation, the belay device cannot therefore be opened in any way. The Birdie belay device also includes a small screw which, when tightened, prevents the user from opening it. This safety option can be used by, for example, climbing centres or climbing courses.
