Cold Steel first introduced this combat knife to the market in 1995 and has manufactured it in various versions ever since, for example under the OSS brand. Black Bear Classic in San Mai® is a beautifully finished luxury version of perhaps the most iconic combat knife shape of all. Its 20 cm blade, sharpened on both sides, offers excellent penetrating power and incredibly smooth cutting action with very little physical effort. The double guard practically eliminates accidental slipping and injury to your own hand. The shaped G10 handle allows very good and precise knife control during use. The guard is doubled on the underside of the handle in a U-shape. This grip, in which the index finger can safely manipulate the knife even with a less firm grip, was probably adopted from rapier or cord grip technique. Our knives made using San Mai III technology have been the domain of Cold Steel for decades. San Mai III technology is based on the methods of Japanese sword makers. It is a sandwich construction of the blade from layers of different hardness. Whilst the middle layer is made from hard steel with high carbon content, the top two layers are made from much harder steel to prevent cracking of the middle layer. As a result, the blade is maximally resistant to loss of edge without the risk of breaking. These luxury blades are manufactured only in limited numbers. The VG-10 steel used in the manufacture of this blade is stainless steel with high carbon content. The perfectly shaped knife handle made from Kraton (Long Kray-Ex™) material offers a non-slip surface. It fits perfectly in the hand and allows even very fine manipulation of the knife in wet and muddy environments. The knife is supplied with a Secure-Ex® sheath.
