Women's Hardshell Jacket Squall – effective protection against rain and snow
The Squall jacket completes the Helikon-Tex range for women with the most modern outer layer. What is the difference between softshell and hardshell? A softshell jacket (for example the women's Gunfighter jacket) is a soft layer that protects against light wind and drizzle, mainly thanks to the use of DWR treatment. On the other hand, hardshell is a harder layer that is designed to provide much greater waterproofing whilst maintaining good breathability. Both of these parameters are combined in the Squall jacket.
As part of expanding the Helikon-Tex range for women, we have made maximum effort to make the Squall hardshell jacket as comfortable as possible and tailored to the female form: we have changed the position of the pockets and adjusted the cut of the jacket.
Membrane properties in the Squall jacket
Waterproofing and at the same time breathability are provided by TorrentStretch®, a 3L (three-layer) laminate developed by Helikon-Tex specialists. Between the stronger outer layer and integrated lining is a membrane containing micropores. Their size prevents water from penetrating into the jacket. At the same time, they are large enough to effectively remove moisture (in the form of water vapour) produced by the body. These three layers together form the TorrentStretch® membrane. The women's Hardshell Squall jacket is a membrane jacket with very good water resistance with a value of 30,000 mm water column.
Key feature – water resistance
The design took care of all the details that users of a hardshell jacket will appreciate. The Squall jacket is a full rain jacket with taped seams and a two-way adjustable hood with high protection. Additional protection against moisture is provided by waterproof YKK® AquaGuard® zips, of which the main zip is two-way and secured at the bottom with a Prym press stud. The Squall hardshell jacket has been treated with a water-repellent DWR finish (Durable Water Repellent), which does not contain harmful PFC (perfluorocarbons).
How the jacket ensures breathability
The basis of a good hardshell jacket is not only waterproofing, but also whether the material allows water vapour to be removed from the body. The TorrentStretch membrane takes care of both, with breathability of 30,000 g/m2/24h. Another parameter worth noting when choosing a hardshell jacket is the RET (resistance to evaporative transfer) coefficient. This determines the permeability of the membrane to water vapour, that is, breathability. The lower the RET coefficient, the lower the resistance, so the jacket breathes better. The best quality is in the range of 0–6 RET and the Squall hardshell has <5 RET, which is very good.
Proven ways to improve ventilation
Additional breathability is provided by vents in the underarm area. During higher exertion, they provide better ventilation and, if needed, help regulate body temperature. Similarly, adjustable sleeve cuffs with hook-and-loop fastening and drawcords work the same way: two in the hood, one sewn into the bottom of the jacket. Thanks to so many ways to adjust the jacket to your body, it can be easily adapted to weather conditions. The jacket is equipped with robust Woojin drawcords.
Practical solutions for all weather
The Squall hardshell jacket was designed so that an additional warm layer (for example the Wolfhound Hoodie jacket) can be placed underneath it in winter. Because of this, the hardshell is suitable not only as a standalone jacket in spring, but also as an outer layer for winter expeditions. It has three pockets, two of which are positioned lower on the outside compared to the men's model to improve wearer comfort. The third pocket is located inside for documents or a phone. Hook-and-loop fastening on the left shoulder makes personalisation easier. In addition, the Squall jacket takes up very little space when folded. Rolled up, it fits into its own hood.
How to care for a membrane jacket
High-tech products require special care to last as long as possible. A membrane jacket should be maintained according to instructions so it does not lose its waterproof and breathable properties. To strengthen them, it is worth regularly renewing the water-repellent layer with a DWR treatment product.
What to wear under a hardshell jacket
To make full use of the properties of the Squall hardshell jacket, it is important to wear clothing made from technical materials underneath it that support free moisture transport. This allows water vapour from the body to escape from the jacket effectively and efficiently.
