Gunto is the name of a Japanese military sword. At the end of the 19th century, the design was based on a French military sabre. In order to awaken the spirit of the samurai code of honour (bushidō) in soldiers, in 1934 it was decided to adopt an appearance similar to a katana. Swords of ordinary soldiers were factory-made, and therefore had simple quality. By contrast, swords of high-ranking officers were equipped with traditional blades that were inherited in their families. The colours of sageo indicated the rank of the officer. Unlike the katana, sageo on the weapon was attached at the end of the handle. John Lee Gunto has the colours of a captain.
