Iai-Do sport concerns the art of drawing a sword and decisive combat technique (Katas), truly as formal practice. An Iaito, a blunt practice sword, is typically used. The development of unity of body, mind and sword (Ki-Ken-Tai-Ichi) is paramount. The highest mastery level is achieved when people are capable of controlling any combat situation even without drawing the sword. The name Kei-Ben means simple and practical sword construction. The blade is made from hand-forged stainless steel, blunt and with a fuller (Bo-Hi). The handle (Tsuka) is made from wood and covered in ray skin (Same). The binding of the handle (Tsuka-Ito) is traditionally made from cotton. The tsuba, made from a zinc-aluminium casting, displays a flower motif. Two menukis in the form of Mitsudomoe are set into the handle. The scabbard (Saya) is made from wood and the blade mounting is brass. Made according to a museum pattern, with a certificate and seal guaranteeing authenticity.
