INSTRUCTIONS: The mirror must be adjusted so that the sun's rays are reflected onto the object you want to draw attention to (ship, aircraft, search party). For this purpose there is an aperture in the centre of the mirror, which allows you to aim the light reflection precisely in the chosen direction.
1. Hold the mirror so that the sun's rays pass through the aperture and fall onto your palm, where they will create a small illuminated spot. You must also see this illuminated spot in the reflection on the back of the mirror.
2. Close one eye and adjust the mirror so that you can see the object you are aiming at through the aperture.
3. Tilt the mirror so that you continue to see the object through the aperture in the mirror and the illuminated spot on your palm aligns with the aperture in the mirror. At that moment the light reflection is aimed precisely in the direction you observe through the aperture.
