Why comfort is about more than just dry feet...
Footwear must provide support, but it also needs to be soft and supple to maintain comfort. During the manufacturing process, leather undergoes a process called tanning. This process adds tannins, which maintain the structure of the leather, allow it to retain its shape and provide support. The leather is also lubricated to increase its suppleness and reduce friction between its fibres. When leather absorbs water, the tannins and lubricants are lost, causing the leather to become dry, stiff and prone to cracking. Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ will nourish the leather with tannins and lubricants to keep it in peak condition.
Leather requires regular maintenance to perform at its best...
Leather is durable, breathable and provides a high level of support, making it an ideal material for footwear. If leather becomes wet, its breathability decreases, leading to wet feet from condensation. Tannins and lubricants can be leached out by water, causing the leather to become dry, stiff and prone to cracking. This is why it is important to treat leather by replenishing tannins and lubricants, as well as maintaining durable water-repellency (DWR).
Use Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ on new or old boots...
If you have new smooth leather boots, you can use Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ to break them in without over-softening and also to add DWR. It should also be used regularly to maintain your smooth leather footwear; it nourishes the leather by replacing tannins and lubricants, preventing it from drying out and stiffening.
Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ can also be used to restore suppleness to dried leather and extend the life of your footwear.
The water-based formulation can be used on wet or dry leather. It absorbs into the leather where it is needed most and does not over-soften.
Old conventional leather softening products can damage your boots...
Traditional leather softening products may be made from animal fats and therefore promote the growth of microorganisms, which can affect the stitching on your boots and also promote leather rot. Additionally, these traditional leather softening products are easy to over-apply, which can damage the support of your footwear.
It is very difficult to over-apply Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ because it is a water-based product and will stop absorbing once the footwear is fully treated.

You do not need to use Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ every time your footwear becomes wet. Cleaning with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™ can restore water-repellency (DWR). If this is not effective, use Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ for routine DWR maintenance. Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ should be used 1-2 times per year to nourish the leather without over-softening.
Nikwax Conditioner for Leather was specially developed to soften and waterproof full-grain leather. For waterproofing textiles and leather footwear, use Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof. For waterproofing nubuck and suede leather footwear, use Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof.

Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ was specially designed and optimised for breathable waterproof smooth leather footwear. It nourishes the leather by replenishing tannins and lubricants and can be used either to break in new leather or to revive dried and cracked leather. Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ also provides smooth leather with water-repellency (DWR) and maintains its breathability.
How to use
Apply Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ by hand...
Use Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ to soften and waterproof new full-grain leather footwear and to restore suppleness to dried leather.
Recommended for Gore-Tex® and Sympatex® footwear.
- Remove dirt with a damp cloth and clean using Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
- Shake well before use. Press the applicator with sponge to break the seal.
- Apply to wet leather. Ensure penetration into seams and stitching.
- Remove excess and buff with a damp cloth to a shine.
For waterproofing nubuck and suede leather footwear, use Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™.
For waterproofing fabric and leather footwear, use Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™.
Always allow footwear to dry naturally...
- Allow footwear to dry at room temperature.
- Paper can be inserted into the toe to absorb excess moisture, which should be replaced as it becomes damp.
- Keep footwear away from fire and radiators; drying too quickly can cause leather to crack and bonded soles to separate.
