Why down loses its insulation properties when it gets wet...
Down-filled products are used to provide lightweight insulation that keeps you warm. The structure of down allows air to be trapped between its fibres, which is warmed by body heat and provides insulation to the wearer.
If down gets wet, it clumps together. This causes a loss of loft and insulation because it cannot effectively trap air. When down is wet, it loses its insulation properties because water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air. Additionally, it gains weight and its breathability is significantly reduced, so you will feel cold, wet and uncomfortable.
Down-filled products are most likely to perspire and become damp inside if used in humid or wet conditions. Therefore, it is important to prevent down-filled gear from becoming soaked by using a durable water-repellent layer (DWR). The outer fabric of your down-filled item, as well as the down inside, must be maintained to ensure comfort. With use, it wears over time and needs to be restored using Nikwax Down Proof™.
Down is ideal for very cold and dry conditions...
Down has exceptional insulation properties, trapping air between its fibres and retaining heat. No other product offers so much insulation with so little weight and volume. It is ideal for sleeping bags, jackets, gilets and down clothing in general.
Water, whether from rain or perspiration condensation, compromises the insulation properties of down. If down gets wet, it loses all its insulation ability and also causes an increase in weight. This reduces user comfort, as they feel cold and wet.
Treating down with Nikwax Down Proof™ gives both the outer fabric and the down filling water resistance (DWR). This prevents water absorption whilst preserving insulation and breathability, keeping you warm, dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Down Proof™ when your down becomes saturated with water...
Your down gear may become saturated with water simply because it is dirty. First try cleaning it using Nikwax Down Wash Direct, and if it is relatively new or recently re-proofed, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be revived simply by cleaning. However, when gear is used extensively, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Down Proof™, and this should be done after first cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. This will add DWR to the outer fabric of the gear and also to the down filling.
Down needs Nikwax Down Proof™ to maintain insulation...
Alternative proofing products are often solvent-based aerosols; alternatively, they may be water-based and use fluorinated hydrocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable. Fluorinated hydrocarbons present potential risks to the environment and to long-term consumer health.
Additionally, alternative proofing products that are not specifically designed for treating down products can compromise down properties. Often they are only surface treatments that treat only the fabric, not the down filling.
Nikwax Down Proof™ was specially designed and optimised for down products, providing durable water-repellency (DWR) to both the outer fabric and down filling whilst preserving insulation and breathability.
How Nikwax Down Proof™ protects...
Nikwax Down Proof™ was specially designed and optimised for down-filled gear. It adds durable water-repellency (DWR) that protects against rain and condensation and enhances the natural insulation properties of down.
Nikwax Down Proof™ extends the effective life of your down gear. It leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual down fibres and fabric fibres, which allows moisture vapour to pass through, maintains breathability and optimises performance in cold and damp conditions.
How to use
Use Nikwax Down Proof™ in the washing machine...
For best results, remove all non-washable parts and clean the item(s) first using Nikwax Down Wash Direct®. Always use Down Wash Direct® and Down Proof™ in separate wash cycles. There is no need to dry the item(s) before proofing. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Remove all detergent residue from the detergent dispenser.
- Place the clean item in the washing machine (maximum 1 item).
- Use 150 ml per item.
- Wash according to the care label, preferably on a low temperature and slow spin.
- Spin 3 times (slow spin).
If the care label permits, tumble dry according to the manufacturer's instructions on a low setting until clumps disappear. Repeatedly breaking up clumps during drying will help restore down loft.
To maintain waterproofing, always wash with Nikwax Down Wash Direct®. Do not use detergents.
Nikwax Down Proof™ can also be applied by hand...
For best results, always clean the item(s) first using Nikwax Down Wash Direct®. There is no need to dry the item(s) before proofing. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
Wear gloves.
- Immerse the clean item(s) in hand-warm water.
- For clothing: Use 150 ml per item in a bowl or 300 ml for 2 items in a bath. Fully immerse the item(s) in the water.
- For sleeping bags: Add water to water: Use 300 ml in 4 cm deep water in a bath.
- Stir, leave for 5–10 minutes to work and then stir thoroughly.
- Rinse clothing in cold water until the water runs clear. For sleeping bags, repeat the rinsing process, allow to drip and gently squeeze the bag to release water.
- To remove excess water, transfer the item(s) to a washing machine and spin dry 3 times (slow spin).
If the care label permits, tumble dry according to the manufacturer's instructions on a low setting until clumps disappear. Repeatedly breaking up clumps during drying will help restore down loft.
To maintain waterproofing, always wash with Nikwax Down Wash Direct®. Do not use detergents.
Ensure down gear is thoroughly dried...
To get the maximum amount of water out of down, it is best to dry it by spinning multiple times, gradually increasing the spin cycle speed each time. Wet down is heavy, so if items are spun too fast whilst still containing a large amount of water, internal baffles may be damaged.
Items treated with Nikwax Down Proof™ do not require heat to develop water-repellency. However, tumble drying (if the care label permits) is recommended to ensure thorough and rapid drying of the down. Leaving down wet or damp can completely ruin it. Tumble dry according to the manufacturer's instructions on a low setting until clumps disappear. Ensure there is sufficient space in the dryer for the item to expand as it dries, as items will return to their original size during drying.
Repeatedly breaking up clumps during drying will help restore down loft.
After tumble drying, it is recommended to air in a warm and dry space for at least one day before packing.
