Why leather needs water-repellency...
Leather garments, equipment and accessories absorb water and "become saturated" if used in damp or wet conditions, if their durable water-repellent (DWR) capability has been compromised.
When leather absorbs water, tannins and oils are lost, causing the leather to become dry, stiff and prone to cracking. Over time this will cause degradation of the leather structure.
Additionally, when leather is wet, its breathability is reduced. This causes leather garments to sweat on the inside and become damp from condensation.
Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the water-resistance of leather equipment (DWR) to ensure comfort and performance. As it is used, the outer surface of leather equipment traps dirt, for example soil, which attracts water, thereby masking the effect of any DWR surface treatment.
Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ will remove dirt and revive DWR, allowing your leather equipment to perform better and last longer.

Leather is durable and breathable, making it an ideal material for use in the manufacture of protective garments, equipment and accessories.
During leather manufacture, tannins are added during tanning to preserve the leather structure and prevent microbial growth. If leather absorbs water, the tannins are lost. Over time this will compromise the leather structure. Additionally, if leather becomes damp, its breathability will be reduced. This is particularly important for users of leather garments, as reduced breathability can lead to condensation forming inside the garment, reducing user comfort.
To prevent water absorption, a durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment is applied to leather equipment.
Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ allows you to clean leather equipment without damaging the DWR. Cleaning with Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ will additionally revive existing DWR, prevent water absorption and preserve breathability.

Your waterproof leather equipment may become saturated with water simply because it is dirty. As it is used, the outer surface of leather equipment traps dirt, for example soil, which attracts water. Traditional leather care preparations, such as saddle soap, are often designed to clean, condition and soften leather. In fact their cleaning is compromised, as dirt moves around on the leather during application but is not rinsed away sufficiently. Additionally, such products often contain animal-derived ingredients which can promote microbial growth and subsequently lead to leather degradation.
Common household cleaning products can leave water-attracting (hydrophilic) residues which mask durable water-repellency (DWR), causing the leather to absorb water and "become wet" in damp or wet conditions. Therefore they should be avoided when cleaning waterproof leather equipment.

Regular cleaning will increase the performance of your leather equipment by removing water-attracting (hydrophilic) dirt and other contaminants trapped during outdoor use. Cleaning with Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ will revive the durable water-repellency (DWR) of your leather equipment and cause water to bead up on the outer surface again. When Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ alone does not revive the DWR of your leather equipment, it is time to restore water-repellency using Nikwax Leather Restorer™.

Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ is a highly effective cleaning product specially designed and optimised for breathable leather equipment. It is a product for use on breathable waterproof leather equipment because it does not leave water-attracting (hydrophilic) residues which cause the leather to absorb water and "become wet".
Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ removes water-absorbing dirt and stains trapped during use; thereby reviving durable water-repellency (DWR) and causing water to bead up on the outer surface again.
Regular cleaning with Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ will revive existing DWR and restore breathability, keeping your leather equipment in peak condition.
How to use
Apply Nikwax Leather Cleaner™ by hand...
Shake well before use. Follow the care instructions on the label. Wear gloves.
- Wipe the surface with a damp cloth or rinse under running water to remove surface dirt. If necessary, use a soft nylon brush.
- Place the wet item on a suitable surface.
- Hold the bottle 15 cm/6 inches from the item.
- Apply evenly to the outer surface of the item. Rub in well and pay particular attention to heavily soiled areas, using a soft brush to remove dirt.
- Wipe the surface with a clean damp cloth.
Note: Test first on a hidden area. Avoid printed logos and special colour surface treatments.

Always allow leather to dry naturally...
- Allow leather clothing, equipment or accessories to dry at room temperature.
- Keep away from fire and radiators; drying too quickly can cause the leather to crack.
