Why leather needs water-repellency...
Leather garments, equipment and accessories absorb water and become waterlogged if used in damp or wet conditions, if their durable water-repellent (DWR) capability has been compromised.
When leather absorbs water, tannins and oils are lost, causing the leather to become dry, stiff and prone to cracking. Over time this will cause degradation of the leather structure.
Additionally, when leather is wet, its breathability is reduced. This causes leather garments to sweat on the inside and become damp from condensation.
Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the water-repellent (DWR) resistance of leather equipment to ensure comfort and performance. With use, the DWR applied to leather equipment is worn away by abrasion. Nikwax Leather Restorer™ provides DWR and nourishes leather using tannins and oils, keeping it in peak condition and helping your equipment perform better and last longer.

Leather is durable and breathable, making it an ideal material for use in the manufacture of protective garments, equipment and accessories.
During leather manufacture, tanning agents are added which maintain the leather structure and prevent microbial growth. If leather absorbs water, the tannins are lost. Over time this will compromise the leather structure. Additionally, if leather becomes damp, its breathability will be reduced. This is particularly important for users of leather garments, as reduced breathability can lead to condensation forming inside the garment, reducing wearer comfort.

Use Nikwax Leather Restorer™ when your leather equipment becomes waterlogged...
Your waterproof leather equipment may become waterlogged simply because it is dirty. Try cleaning it first with Nikwax Leather Cleaner™, and if it is relatively new or recently re-impregnated, the durable water-repellent (DWR) layer will be restored simply by cleaning. However, once your leather equipment has been thoroughly worn or used, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Leather Restorer™.

Nikwax Leather Restorer™ has been developed and optimised to provide durable water-repellency (DWR) for leather equipment, accessories and protective garments.
To provide DWR to smooth leather footwear use Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ or Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ to restore suppleness to dried leather without over-softening. For nubuck or suede leather use Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™. For combined fabric and leather footwear use Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™.

Nikwax Leather Restorer™ has been specially designed and optimised for breathable waterproof smooth leather equipment. It provides smooth leather with durable water-repellency (DWR), maintains breathability and conditions leather by replenishing tannins and oils.
Nikwax Leather Restorer™ is absorbed into leather where it is needed most and does not over-soften. Because it is water-based, it can be used on wet or dry leather.
How to use
Apply Nikwax Leather Restorer™ by hand...
For best results always clean the item(s) first with Nikwax Leather Cleaner™. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before impregnation. Shake well before use. Follow the instructions on the label for treatment.
Wear gloves.
- Protect your work surface and place the clean, secured wet item on a flat surface.
- Hold the bottle 15 cm/6 inches from the item.
- Apply evenly to the outside of the item.
- Wait 2 minutes.
- Remove excess product and rub it in well with a lint-free cloth.
- Carefully check that you have not missed any areas.
Note: For light/coloured leather, test first on a hidden area.
To impregnate smooth leather footwear use Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ (non-softening product) or Nikwax Conditioner for Leather™ (softening product). To impregnate nubuck or suede leather use Nikwax Nubuck and Suede Proof™. To impregnate combined fabric and leather footwear use Nikwax Fabric and Leather Proof™.
Always allow leather to dry naturally...
Leather clothing, equipment or accessories should be allowed to dry at room temperature. Keep away from fire and radiators; drying too quickly can cause leather to crack.
