Why breathability depends on water-repellency...
Breathable waterproof footwear used in damp or wet conditions will most likely perspire and become damp inside. If the outer nubuck or suede absorbs water, the breathability of the footwear will be reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the water resistance of the footwear (DWR) to ensure comfort. Over time it wears away and needs to be restored with Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™.
Waterproof footwear must be breathable...
When you are active and wearing footwear, socks wick moisture away from your feet and keep them dry. However, if your footwear absorbs water and becomes "soaked", its breathability will be reduced. Moisture vapours will not be able to escape through the material, so your feet will feel sticky and damp. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ provides footwear with durable water-repellency (DWR) that prevents water absorption whilst maintaining breathability, so your feet stay dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ when your footwear becomes soaked with water...
Your footwear may become soaked with water simply because it is dirty. First try to clean it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™, and if it is relatively new or recently re-impregnated, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be revived simply by cleaning. But once footwear has been worn extensively, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™, after first cleaning with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
Proper cleaning can be as important as impregnation...
Using the correct cleaning product is as important as using the correct DWR treatment. Common cleaning products leave a thin water-absorbing film on materials that masks their water resistance (DWR). Therefore, always clean your waterproof footwear with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™. Remember that dirt itself works against DWR, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.

Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ is easy and quick to apply; either spray it or apply with a sponge to wet footwear. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ provides highly durable water-repellency (DWR) that develops as it air-dries. It leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual nubuck and suede fibres. This allows moisture vapours to pass through, preserving breathability and keeping feet dry. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ has been specially designed and optimised for combined nubuck and suede footwear and will preserve the structure of the materials.
How to use
Apply Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ by hand...
- Remove dirt with a damp cloth and clean using Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
- Shake well before use. Protect your work surface.
- Apply generously to wet footwear; spray from 5 cm away or apply with a sponge.
- Carefully remove excess drops or runs and allow to air-dry naturally.
Note: Light or coloured nubuck or suede may darken after treatment. Test first on a hidden area.
Always allow footwear to air-dry naturally...
- Allow footwear to dry at room temperature.
- Paper can be inserted into the toe area to absorb excess moisture, which should be replaced once damp.
- Keep footwear away from fire and radiators; drying too quickly can cause leather to crack and glued soles to separate.
