Why fleece clothing keeps you warm...
Fleece fabrics are used to provide lightweight, insulating mid-layers and also hats and gloves to keep you warm. Fleece fabrics are made from synthetic fibres. The fabric construction allows air to be trapped between the fibres, which is warmed by body heat and provides the wearer with insulation.
Water compromises the insulating properties of fleece...
Although individual fleece fibres cannot absorb water, water can become trapped in the spaces between the fibres. Water accumulation reduces the insulating properties of fleece and also causes weight gain; fleece can hold up to 50% of its weight in water!
This reduces wearer comfort and causes a feeling of dampness and cold, but more importantly, the reduction in insulation is dangerous and in severe cases can lead to hypothermia.
When your fleece becomes saturated with water, use Nikwax Polar Proof®...
Your fleece garment may become saturated with water simply because it is dirty. First try to clean it using Nikwax Tech Wash® and if it is relatively new or recently reproofed, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be revived simply by cleaning. But once the garment has been well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Polar Proof®, after first cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash®.
Proper cleaning can be as important as proofing...
Using the correct cleaning product is as important as using the correct proofing product. Ordinary detergents leave a thin water-absorbing film on materials, which masks their water-repellency. Therefore, always clean your waterproof garments with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Remember that dirt itself works against water repellency, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.
How Nikwax Polar Proof® protects...
Nikwax Polar Proof® has been specially designed and optimised for fleece garments; it leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres, which allows moisture vapour to pass through, thereby preserving breathability and optimising performance in wet weather. Additionally, it prevents pilling of fleece fabrics, thereby extending the life of the gear.
Nikwax Polar Proof® is easy and quick to apply in the washing machine and ensures that the finish passes right through the garment. The highly durable water-repellent capability (DWR) of Nikwax Polar Proof® develops as it air dries. Therefore, there is no need for tumble drying, saving energy.
How to use
Use Nikwax Polar Proof® in the washing machine...
For best results, always first wash the item(s) using Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle. There is no need to dry the item(s) before proofing. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Remove all detergent residue from the detergent dispenser.
- Place clean items in the washing machine (maximum 3 items).
- Use 50 ml for 1 item and 100 ml for 2-3 items.
- Wash according to the care label information.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits. To maintain water-repellency, always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents.
Nikwax Polar Proof® can be applied by hand...

- Wear gloves, immerse the clean garment(s) in 6 litres of hand-warm water in a sink or bowl.
- Use 50 ml for 1-2 items.
- Stir, leave soaking for 5 minutes and then stir thoroughly.
- Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits. To maintain water-repellency, always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents.
