Why breathability is essential for your animal's comfort...
Your animal will most likely be sticky and uncomfortable in wet or damp conditions if the breathability of its waterproof rug or coat is compromised. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the rug/coat can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain durable water-repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your animal's rug/coat to ensure comfort. Nikwax Rug Wash™ will revive DWR, and thus the breathability of your animal's rug/coat, ensuring your animal's comfort.
Waterproof fabrics must be breathable...
Some animals, including dogs and horses, may be exposed to the weather whilst outdoors. When it rains, waterproof rugs and coats are used to keep them dry and comfortable.
It is important that these waterproof fabrics allow moisture vapour to pass through or "breathe"; otherwise moisture cannot evaporate, so it will condense on the inside of the item. Additionally, if the outer fabric absorbs water and "becomes saturated", the breathability of the product will decrease. Both of these situations result in the animal being cold and uncomfortable.
The breathability of rugs and coats can be maintained by ensuring good condition of durable water-repellency (DWR). Nikwax Rug Wash™ will revive DWR, preventing water absorption and maintaining breathability so your animals stay dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Rug Wash™ when your animal's rugs and coats become saturated with water...
Your waterproof animal rugs and coats may become saturated with water because the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) has been compromised by dirt, or because they have been cleaned with ordinary household detergent. Dirt attracts water and household detergents leave water-attracting residues (hydrophilic), which leads to the fabric "becoming saturated" in wet or damp conditions.
If your animal rugs or blankets are relatively new or have recently been treated with Nikwax Rug Proof™, then cleaning with Nikwax Rug Wash™ will not only remove dirt such as soil and residues left by household detergents, but will also revive DWR.
Always clean animal rugs and coats before storage...
Regular cleaning of your waterproof animal rugs and coats will increase their performance and help maintain the durable water-repellent layer (DWR).
We recommend cleaning your animal rugs and coats at the end of the season before storage. This will ensure they are free from dirt, grease, oils and other contaminants that lead to microbial growth, which damages animal rugs and coats.

How to use
Apply Nikwax Rug Wash™ in the washing machine...
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Rug Wash™ a sponge or soft nylon brush. Remove all parts that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use detergent.
- Remove all detergent residue from the detergent dispenser.
- Place 1 item in the washing machine (maximum 1 rug per wash*).
- Ensure the washing machine is large enough to allow free movement of the item in the drum.
- Use 150 ml per item.
- Wash according to the care label information. Select a cycle that allows thorough rinsing of the item.

* For large items, we recommend using a commercial laundry.
Hand wash using Nikwax Rug Wash™...
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Rug Wash™ a sponge or soft nylon brush. Remove all parts that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use detergent.
- Wear gloves. Lay the item out on a clean surface and thoroughly dampen it with a hose.
- Dilute 1 part Rug Wash™ with 2 parts hot water.
- Using a brush, scrub the solution into the fabric, paying attention to soiled areas.
- Rinse thoroughly in clean water.
Drying animal rugs and coats after cleaning...
Allow to air dry or tumble dry on low setting if the care label permits.
Reproofing items with Nikwax® Rug Proof at least once a year. Items do not need to be dry before reproofing.
