Why breathability depends on water-repellency...
Breathable softshell garments are most likely to become damp and wet inside when used in wet or damp conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is essential to maintain durable water-repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of a softshell jacket to ensure comfort. Over time it wears away and needs to be restored with Nikwax Softshell Proof™.

Softshell fabrics combine the desirable properties of hardshells and fleece to improve user comfort whilst providing protection in most conditions.
Softshells are breathable and stretchy whilst also being highly water-repellent and windproof. They adapt to the shape of the wearer, allow moisture to be wicked away from the body and at the same time shed water and protect against cold wind. Softshell jackets represent a versatile outer layer that can handle most conditions.
To preserve their water-repellency and breathability, it is essential that a durable water-repellent layer (DWR) is maintained. Nikwax Softshell Proof™ was specially developed to maintain optimal performance of softshell fabrics.
Use Nikwax Softshell Proof™ when your softshell garment becomes saturated with water...
Your softshell garment may become saturated with water simply because it is dirty. Try cleaning it first using Nikwax Tech Wash® and if it is relatively new or recently re-treated, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be restored simply by cleaning. However, once the garment has been well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Softshell Proof™ after first cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash®.

Using the correct DWR treatment is important. Nikwax Softshell Proof™ Spray-On is fantastic for softshell products with a moisture-wicking lining, because it delivers durable water-repellency (DWR) without compromising water-shedding properties. However, if moisture-wicking linings are not present, using Nikwax Softshell Proof™ Wash-In ensures you do not miss any areas (complete DWR coverage!) and applies easily in the washing machine.

Nikwax Softshell Proof™ Spray-On applies easily and quickly and its highly durable water-repellent layer (DWR) develops as it air dries. There is no need for tumble drying, which saves energy and protects more vulnerable, older garments from heat.
Nikwax Softshell Proof™ Spray-On was specially designed and optimised for softshell garments; it leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres that allows moisture vapour to pass through and preserves breathability.
Spray application allows direct treatment of areas that need it most (for example elbows and seams on jackets) and does not compromise the properties of internal moisture-wicking linings.

For best results, remove all non-washable parts and always clean the item(s) first using Nikwax Tech Wash®. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before treating.
Shake well before use.
- Protect the work surface and place the clean, wet, secured garment on a flat surface.
- Hold the bottle 15 cm/6 inches away from the garment.
- Apply evenly to the outer side of the fabric.
- Wait 2 minutes. Rub off any excess, which is especially important on textured fabrics.
- Carefully check that you have not missed any areas.
