Why breathability depends on water-repellency...
Breathable waterproof clothing will most likely perspire and become damp inside if used in wet or damp conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain durable water-repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of the jacket to ensure comfort. Nikwax Tech Wash® will revive DWR, and thus the breathability of your clothing.
Waterproof clothing must be breathable...
When we work hard, we perspire. Evaporation of sweat cools us and keeps us comfortable. When it rains, however, we want to avoid getting wet, so we put on a waterproof outer garment to keep us dry.
Waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapours to pass through or "breathe", otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, which causes overheating and dampness from condensation. Furthermore, if the outer fabric of the garment absorbs water and "becomes saturated", its breathability will decrease, causing you to feel clammy and wet.
Nikwax Tech Wash® will revive the durable water-repellency (DWR) of your garment, preventing water absorption, maintaining breathability and keeping you dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® when your waterproof clothing and equipment becomes saturated with water...
Your waterproof clothing and equipment may become saturated with water because the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) has been compromised by dirt or because it has been cleaned with ordinary washing powder. Dirt attracts water and household washing powders leave behind water-attracting residues (hydrophilic), leading to "saturation" of the fabric in wet or damp conditions.
If your waterproof garment or equipment is relatively new or has recently been treated with Nikwax proofing product, cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash® will not only remove dirt, such as grime and residues left by household washing powders, but will also revive DWR.
Make sure you clean with the right product...
Ordinary washing powders leave behind water-repellent (hydrophilic) residues that mask durable water-repellency (DWR), causing fabrics to absorb water and "become saturated" in wet or damp conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid them when cleaning waterproof clothing and equipment.
Products that claim to clean and waterproof at the same time are generally not very effective cleaning products and may seal in dirt.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® to thoroughly and safely clean waterproof clothing and equipment, revive DWR and breathability.
You do not need to re-proof every time you clean...
Regular cleaning will increase the performance of your equipment. With regular cleaning, you should be able to clean your equipment 5 - 6 times using Nikwax Tech Wash before re-proofing is needed. When Nikwax Tech Wash® alone does not revive the durable water-repellency (DWR) of your equipment (for example, water does not bead on the fabric surface), it is time to re-proof using an appropriate Nikwax proofing product.

Application in the washing machine is quick, simple and will ensure thorough cleaning of the entire garment.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® in the washing machine...
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Tech Wash® and a sponge or soft nylon brush. Remove all items that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the instructions on the care label. Do not use ordinary washing powders.
- Remove all washing powder residue from the washing powder dispenser.
- Place item(s) in the washing machine (maximum 2 items).
- Use 150 ml in medium hard/hard water areas* and 100 ml in soft water areas for 1-2 items.
- Wash according to the data on the care label.
* If the kettle becomes discoloured, you have hard water. In the case of extremely hard water, use 200 ml.
You can also use Nikwax Tech Wash® by hand...
Wear gloves.
- Immerse item(s) in 6 l of hand-heated water in a sink or bowl.
- Use 150 ml in medium hard/hard water areas* and 100 ml in soft water areas for 1-2 items.
- Rinse 3 times in clean water.
*If the kettle becomes discoloured, you have hard water. In the case of extremely hard water, use 200 ml.
If the item does not require re-proofing, air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits.
If you intend to re-proof the washed item, there is no need to dry it first.
