Synthetic fabrics used to make tents and rucksacks are coated with a water-repellent finish. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation destroys water-repellency and also leads to reduced tear strength of the fabric, which significantly shortens the lifespan of equipment. Applying Nikwax Concentrated Tent & Gear SolarProof® can double the effective lifespan of equipment by protecting against UV damage whilst also providing durable water-repellency (DWR) that prevents rain penetration.
Tent and rucksack fabrics are lightweight and strong, but vulnerable...
Tents and rucksacks use synthetic fabrics such as nylon or polyester, with a thin waterproof polyurethane (PU) or elastomeric layer on the inside and a durable water-repellent (DWR) layer on the outside. This combination provides great strength and water resistance combined with low weight, which are ideal properties for outdoor equipment.
Unfortunately, these fabrics are sensitive to sunlight and can lose up to half their strength after two weeks of continuous exposure. In addition, the internal coating degrades if left wet for extended periods.

During use, the fabric of equipment collects dirt and other contaminants that prevent water from running off the fabric surface. When this happens, DWR can be revived by cleaning with Nikwax Tent and Gear Solar Wash. Over time, DWR wears away with use. Both DWR and UV protection can be topped up by reapplying Nikwax Concentrated Tent & Gear SolarProof®.

How to use
Nikwax Concentrated Tent & Gear SolarProof® should be diluted before use...
- Nikwax Concentrated Tent and Gear SolarProof® should be diluted in water before use.
- Mix 150 ml sachet with 350 ml water and stir well.
Nikwax Concentrated Tent & Gear SolarProof® can be applied by hand...
For best results, always clean the item(s) first. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before impregnation.
- Pitch the tent OR protect the work surface and lay the clean item on a flat surface.
- Apply the diluted product evenly to the outside of the fabric using a spray, brush or sponge (avoid rucksack straps). For large items, apply in sections.
- During treatment of the fabric, remove excess product with a damp cloth.
- Carefully check that you have not missed any areas.
- After a few minutes, check and remove excess product with a damp cloth*.
*Marks may appear on the fabric if excess product is not removed. Test on a hidden area first.
Use approximately 50 ml of diluted product per 1 m² of fabric. Coverage is approximate and depends on the condition of the fabric being treated.
To maintain waterproofing, always clean with Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash. Do not use laundry detergent.
To impregnate cotton, polycotton or canvas, use Nikwax Cotton Proof™.

DWR and ultraviolet (UV) protection will develop when the fabric is dry. Allow the item(s) to dry completely before packing.
