Synthetic textiles used to make tents and rucksacks are coated with a water-repellent finish. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation destroys water-repellency and also leads to reduced tear strength in the fabric, significantly shortening the lifespan of the equipment.

Tents and rucksacks use synthetic fabrics such as nylon or polyester, with a thin waterproof polyurethane (PU) or elastomeric layer on the inside and a durable water-repellent (DWR) layer on the outside. This combination provides great strength and water resistance combined with low weight; ideal properties for outdoor equipment.
Unfortunately, these fabrics are sensitive to sunlight and after two weeks of continuous exposure can lose up to half their strength. Additionally, the inner layer will deteriorate if left wet for extended periods.

To gain maximum benefit from the UV protection and durable water-repellent (DWR) protection of Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof®, it is best applied to equipment when new.
During use, equipment fabric picks up dirt and other contaminants that prevent water from reaching the fabric surface. When this happens, DWR can be revived by cleaning with Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash®.
Over time, DWR wears away with use. Both DWR and UV protection can be restored by reapplying Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof®.

Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® can be applied to wet or dry synthetic fabrics. It is water-based, non-aerosol, non-flammable and environmentally friendly. It contains no harmful solvents and is completely fluorine-free.

How to use
Apply Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® by hand...
For best results, always clean the item(s) first. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before treatment.
- Protect your work surface and place the clean wet item on a flat surface or pitch the tent and dampen it.
- Spray evenly onto the outside of the fabric. Avoid rucksack straps.
- Wait 2 minutes. Remove any excess product with a damp cloth.
- Carefully check that you have not missed any areas.
Use approximately 50 ml of product per 1 m² of fabric.
Coverage is approximate and depends on the condition of the fabric being treated.
To maintain waterproofing and UV protection, always clean with Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash®. Do not use ordinary detergents.
For treating cotton, polycotton and canvas use Nikwax Cotton Proof.
Equipment treated with Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® requires no heat to develop durable water-repellency (DWR)...
DWR and ultraviolet (UV) protection will develop as the fabric dries. Allow the item(s) to dry completely before packing away.
