Why down items lose their insulation properties when they get dirty...
Down-filled products are used to provide lightweight insulation that keeps you warm. The structure of down allows air to be trapped between its fibres, which is warmed by body heat and provides insulation to the wearer.
With use, dirt and body oils accumulate on down items. This affects both the fabric and the down filling. Dirt attracts water; if the fabric absorbs water, rain and condensation can easily transfer into the down. If down gets wet, it clumps. This causes loss of loft and insulation because it cannot effectively trap air. When down is wet, it loses its insulation properties because water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air. In addition, it gains weight and its breathability is significantly reduced, so you will feel cold, wet and uncomfortable.
Down-filled products are most likely to perspire and become damp inside if used in humid or wet conditions. Therefore, it is important to prevent down-filled equipment from getting wet by maintaining durable water-repellency (DWR). The outer fabric of your down-filled item, as well as the down inside, must be maintained to ensure comfort. Nikwax Down Wash Direct will restore insulation and renew DWR.
Down is ideal for very cold and dry conditions...
Down has exceptional insulation properties, trapping air between its fibres and thus retaining heat. No other product offers so much insulation with so little weight and volume. It is ideal for sleeping bags, jackets, gilets and down clothing in general.
Water, whether from rain or perspiration condensation, impairs the insulation properties of down. If down becomes damp, it loses all its insulation ability and also causes an increase in weight. This reduces user comfort, causing a feeling of cold and dampness, but more importantly, the loss of insulation is dangerous and in severe cases can lead to hypothermia. When down is wet, it loses all its insulation properties because water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air.
Nikwax Down Wash Direct restores insulation and renews durable water-repellency (DWR) on both the outer fabric and down filling. This prevents water absorption and maintains breathability, keeping you warm, dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Down Wash Direct when your down items get wet...
Your down items may get wet because the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) has been compromised by dirt, or because they have been cleaned with ordinary washing powder. Dirt attracts water and household washing powders leave water-attracting residues (hydrophilic), leading to "wetting" of the fabric and down in wet or damp conditions.
If your down products are relatively new or have been recently treated with Nikwax Down Proof, cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct® will not only remove dirt such as stains and residues left by household washing powders, but will also restore insulation and renew DWR.
However, after heavy use of your equipment, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Down Proof after the first cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. This will add DWR to the outer fabric of your equipment and also to the down filling.
Down needs specialist cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct...
Ordinary washing powders leave water-repellent (hydrophilic) residues on both the outer fabric and down filling, which mask water resistance (DWR). This causes the fabric and down to absorb water and "get wet" in damp or wet conditions, leading to loss of insulation.
Cleaning products that are not specifically designed to treat down products can also damage down properties. If you choose the wrong cleaning product, dirt from the outer fabric may be redeposited onto the down, reducing its loft and insulation. Therefore, they should be avoided when cleaning down items.
Nikwax Down Wash Direct has been specially designed and optimised for down items. Using Nikwax Down Wash Direct, you can safely and thoroughly clean your down products, restore their insulation, breathability and renew DWR.
How you treat down is as important as the products you use...
Wet down is heavy, so it is important to use the correct wash cycle to avoid damaging the washing machine or your down products. A gentle cycle with slow spin is recommended.
After washing, it is important that down items are thoroughly rinsed and very thoroughly dried. Even if you treat your items by hand, drying with a spin at slow speed is recommended to remove the maximum amount of water from the down. It is best to spin the laundry several times, gradually increasing the spin cycle speed each time. If items are spun too fast while still holding a large amount of water, the internal baffles may be damaged.
Tumble drying is recommended to ensure thorough and rapid drying of the down. Leaving wet or damp down can completely ruin it. Make sure there is enough space in the tumble dryer to accommodate the item after drying, as items will return to their original size during drying. Repeatedly breaking up clumps during the drying process will help restore down loft.
How Nikwax Down Wash Direct maintains your down...
Nikwax Down Wash Direct has been specially designed and optimised for down-filled equipment. It is a highly effective cleaning product that removes body oils and dirt from both the fabric and down filling. It also restores durable water-repellency (DWR) on both the outer fabric and down. This protects against rain and condensation, prevents the product from getting wet and preserves the natural insulation properties of down. In addition, it restores breathability, allowing moisture vapour to pass through the product, optimising performance in cold and damp conditions.
Nikwax Down Wash Direct extends the effective life of your down equipment. It is a way to thoroughly clean your down clothing and equipment. Application in the washing machine is quick, simple and ensures thorough cleaning of the entire item.
How to use
Use Nikwax Down Wash Direct in the washing machine...
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Nikwax Down Wash Direct. Remove any parts that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use ordinary washing powders.
Washing in the washing machine (down clothing only)
- Remove all washing powder residue from the washing powder dispenser.
- Place a maximum of 2 items of laundry in the washing machine.
- Add 100 ml.
- Wash according to the care label, preferably on a low temperature and slow spin.
- To remove excess water, transfer the item(s) to the washing machine and spin 3 times until dry (slow spin).
If the care label allows, tumble dry according to the manufacturer's instructions on a low setting until "clumps" disappear. Repeatedly breaking up clumps during drying will help restore down loft.
(Sleeping bags should be washed by hand or in a professional washing machine).
Nikwax Down Wash Direct can also be used by hand...
Sleeping bags and very large jackets are best washed by hand in a bath or equivalent washing machine and then dried in a washing machine.
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Nikwax Down Wash Direct. Remove any parts that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use ordinary washing powders.
Wear gloves.
- Add 100 ml to 12-15 l of hand-heated water.
- Immerse the item and stir to mix and ensure complete soaking.
- Leave to soak for 5-10 minutes and then stir thoroughly.
- Rinse thoroughly until the water is clear.
- To remove excess water, transfer the item(s) to the washing machine and dry 3 times (slow spin).
If the care label allows, tumble dry according to the manufacturer's instructions on a low setting until "clumps" disappear. Repeatedly breaking up clumps during drying will help restore down loft.
Ensure thorough drying of down equipment...
If you intend to re-treat the washed item, it is not necessary to dry it first.
To get the maximum amount of water out of the down, it is best to dry it with multiple spins, gradually increasing the spin cycle speed each time. Wet down is heavy, so if items are spun too fast while still holding a large amount of water, the internal baffles may be damaged.
Tumble drying is recommended (if the care label allows) to ensure thorough and rapid drying of the down. Leaving wet or damp down can completely ruin it. Dry in the dryer according to the manufacturer's instructions on a low setting until clumps disappear. Make sure there is enough space in the dryer to accommodate the item after drying, as items will return to their original size during drying.
Repeatedly breaking up clumps during drying will help restore down loft.
After tumble drying, it is recommended to air for at least one day in a warm and dry place before packing.

Use Nikwax Down Proof™ when your down gets wet...
Your down equipment may get wet simply because it is dirty. Try cleaning it first with Nikwax Down Wash Direct, and if it is relatively new or recently re-proofed, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be restored simply by cleaning. However, when equipment is used heavily, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Down Proof™, after the first cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. This will add DWR to the outer fabric of your equipment and also to the down filling.
Down needs Nikwax Down Proof™ to maintain insulation...
Alternative proofing products are often solvent-based aerosols; alternatively, they may be water-based and use fluorinated hydrocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable. Fluorinated hydrocarbons present potential risks to the environment and to long-term consumer health.
In addition, alternative proofing products that are not specifically designed to treat down products can damage down loft properties. Often they are only surface treatments that treat only the fabric, not the down filling.
Nikwax Down Proof™ has been specially designed and optimised for down products, providing durable water-repellency (DWR) to both the outer fabric and down filling whilst maintaining insulation and breathability.
How Nikwax Down Proof™ protects...
Nikwax Down Proof™ has been specially designed and optimised for down-filled equipment. It adds durable water-repellency (DWR), which protects against rain and condensation and enhances the natural insulation properties of down.
Nikwax Down Proof™ extends the effective life of your down equipment. It leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual down fibres and fabric fibres, which allows moisture vapour to pass through, maintains breathability and optimises performance in cold and damp conditions.
