Why breathability depends on water-repellency...
Breathable waterproof clothing will most likely sweat and become damp inside if used in wet or damp conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric of the jacket to ensure comfort. Nikwax Tech Wash® will revive the DWR, and with it the breathability of your clothing.
Waterproof clothing must be breathable...
When we work hard, we sweat. Evaporation of sweat cools us and keeps us comfortable. When it rains, however, we want to avoid getting wet, so we put on a waterproof outer layer to keep us dry.
Waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapours to pass through or "breathe", otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, causing overheating and getting wet from condensation. Additionally, if the outer fabric of the garment absorbs water and "becomes saturated", its breathability decreases, causing you to feel clammy and wet.
Nikwax Tech Wash® will revive the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish of your garment, preventing water absorption, maintaining breathability and keeping you dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® when your waterproof clothing and gear become saturated with water...
Your waterproof clothing and gear may become saturated with water because the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) has been compromised by dirt or because it has been cleaned with ordinary washing powder. Dirt attracts water and household washing powders leave behind water-attracting residues (hydrophilic), leading to "saturation" of the fabric in wet or damp conditions.
If your waterproof garment or gear is relatively new or has recently been treated with Nikwax proofing product, cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash® will not only remove dirt such as stains and residues left by household washing powders, but will also revive the DWR.
Make sure you clean with the right product...
Ordinary washing powders leave behind water-repellent (hydrophilic) residues that mask the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish, causing fabrics to absorb water and "become saturated" in damp or wet conditions. Therefore, you should avoid them when cleaning waterproof clothing and gear.
Products that claim to clean and waterproof at the same time are generally not very effective cleaning products and may seal in dirt.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® to thoroughly and safely clean waterproof clothing and gear, revive DWR and breathability.
You do not need to re-proof with every clean...
Regular cleaning will increase the performance of your gear. With regular cleaning, you should be able to clean your gear 5–6 times with Nikwax Tech Wash before re-proofing is needed. When Nikwax Tech Wash® alone no longer revives the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish of your gear (for example, water does not bead on the fabric surface), it is time to re-proof with an appropriate Nikwax proofing product.

Application in the washing machine is quick, simple and ensures thorough cleaning of the entire garment.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® in the washing machine...
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Tech Wash® and a sponge or soft nylon brush. Remove any parts that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use ordinary washing powders.
- Remove all washing powder residue from the washing powder dispenser.
- Place item(s) in the washing machine (maximum 2 items).
- Use 150 ml in medium hard/hard water areas* and 100 ml in soft water areas for 1–2 items.
- Wash according to the care label instructions.
* If your kettle becomes furred, you have hard water. In the case of extremely hard water, use 200 ml.
Nikwax Tech Wash® can also be used by hand...
Wear gloves.
- Soak item(s) in 6 litres of hand-warm water in a sink or bowl.
- Use 150 ml in medium hard/hard water areas* and 100 ml in soft water areas for 1–2 items.
- Rinse 3 times in clean water.
* If your kettle becomes furred, you have hard water. In the case of extremely hard water, use 200 ml.
If the item does not require re-proofing, air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits.
If you intend to re-proof the washed item, there is no need to dry it first.
For breathable clothing use Nikwax TX.Direct®, for gear use Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® or for cotton, polycotton and canvas use Nikwax Cotton Proof™.

Why fleece clothing keeps you warm...
Fleece fabrics are used to provide lightweight, insulating mid-layers and also hats and gloves to keep you warm. Fleece fabrics are made from synthetic fibres. The fabric construction allows air to be trapped between the fibres, which is warmed by body heat and provides the wearer with insulation.
Water impairs the insulating properties of fleece...
Although individual pile fibres cannot absorb water, water can become trapped in the spaces between the fibres. Water accumulation reduces the insulating properties of the pile and also causes an increase in weight; pile can contain up to 50% of its weight in water!
This reduces user comfort and causes a feeling of dampness and cold, but more importantly, the reduction in insulation is dangerous and in severe cases can lead to hypothermia.
When your fleece becomes saturated with water, use Nikwax Polar Proof®...
Your fleece garment may become saturated with water simply because it is dirty. Try cleaning it first with Nikwax Tech Wash® and if it is relatively new or has recently been re-proofed, the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish will be revived simply by cleaning. But once the garment has been well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Polar Proof®, and this should be done after first cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash®.
Proper cleaning can be just as important as proofing...
Using the right cleaning product is just as important as using the right proofing product. Ordinary cleaning products leave a thin film of water-absorbing material on fabrics, which masks their water-repellency. Therefore, always clean your waterproof garments with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Remember that dirt itself works against water-repellency, so regular cleaning will increase performance.

Nikwax Polar Proof® was specially designed and optimised for fleece garments; it leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres that allows moisture to pass through, preserving breathability and optimising performance in wet weather. Nikwax Polar Proof® is easy and quick to apply in the washing machine and ensures that the finish passes directly through the garment. The highly durable water-repellent (DWR) capability of Nikwax Polar Proof® develops as it air dries. Therefore, there is no need for tumble drying, saving energy.
How to use
Use Nikwax Polar Proof® in the washing machine...
For best results, always wash item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle. There is no need to dry item(s) before proofing. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Remove all washing powder residue from the washing powder dispenser.
- Place clean items in the washing machine (maximum 3 items).
- Use 50 ml for 1 item and 100 ml for 2–3 items.
- Wash according to the care label instructions.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits. To maintain water-repellency, always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use washing powders.
Nikwax Polar Proof® can be applied by hand...
For best results, always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash®. There is no need to dry item(s) before proofing. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Wear gloves, soak clean garment(s) in 6 litres of hand-warm water in a sink or bowl.
- Use 50 ml for 1–2 items.
- Stir, leave soaking for 5 minutes and then stir thoroughly.
- Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits. To maintain water-repellency, always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use washing powders.
