Why breathability depends on water-repellency...
Breathable waterproof clothing is most likely to become damp and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain durable water-repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of the jacket to ensure comfort. Nikwax Tech Wash® will revive DWR, and thus the breathability of your clothing.
Waterproof clothing must be breathable...
When we work hard, we sweat. Evaporation of sweat cools us and keeps us comfortable. However, when it rains, we want to avoid getting wet, so we put on a waterproof outer garment to keep us dry.
Waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapours to pass through or "breathe", otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, causing overheating and dampness from condensation. Additionally, if the outer fabric of the garment absorbs water and "becomes saturated", its breathability will decrease, causing you to feel sticky and wet.
Nikwax Tech Wash® will revive the durable water-repellency (DWR) of your garment, preventing water absorption, maintaining breathability and keeping you dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® when your waterproof clothing and equipment become saturated with water...
Your waterproof clothing and equipment may become saturated with water because the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) has been compromised by dirt, or because it has been cleaned with ordinary washing powder. Dirt attracts water and household washing products leave water-attracting residues (hydrophilic), leading to "saturation" of the fabric in wet or damp conditions.
If your waterproof garment or equipment is relatively new or has recently been treated with Nikwax proofing product, cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash® will not only remove dirt, such as soil and residues left by household washing products, but will also revive DWR.
Make sure you clean with the right product...
Ordinary washing products leave water-repellent (hydrophilic) residues that mask durable water-repellency (DWR), causing fabrics to absorb water and "become saturated" in damp or wet conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid them when cleaning waterproof clothing and equipment.
Products that claim to clean and waterproof at the same time are generally not very effective cleaning products and may seal in dirt.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® to thoroughly and safely clean waterproof clothing and equipment, revive DWR and breathability.
You do not need to re-proof with every clean...
Regular cleaning will increase the performance of your equipment. With regular cleaning, you should be able to clean your equipment 5 - 6 times using Nikwax Tech Wash before re-proofing is needed. When Nikwax Tech Wash® alone does not revive the durable water-repellency (DWR) of your equipment (for example, water does not bead on the fabric surface), it is time to re-proof using an appropriate Nikwax proofing product.

Application in the washing machine is quick, simple and ensures thorough cleaning of the entire garment.
Use Nikwax Tech Wash® in the washing machine...
To treat stubborn stains before washing, use neat Tech Wash® and a sponge or soft nylon brush. Remove all parts that cannot be washed. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use ordinary washing products.
- Remove all washing product residue from the washing product dispenser.
- Place item(s) in the washing machine (maximum 2 items).
- Use 150 ml in medium hard/hard water areas* and 100 ml in soft water areas per 1-2 items.
- Wash according to the care label instructions.
* If your kettle becomes furred, you have hard water. In the case of extremely hard water, use 200 ml.
You can also use Nikwax Tech Wash® by hand...
Wear gloves.
- Immerse item(s) in 6 litres of hand-heated water in a sink or bowl.
- Use 150 ml in medium hard/hard water areas* and 100 ml in soft water areas per 1-2 items.
- Rinse 3 times in clean water.
*If your kettle becomes furred, you have hard water. In the case of extremely hard water, use 200 ml.
If the item does not require re-proofing, air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits.
If you intend to re-proof the washed item, there is no need to dry it first.

Use Nikwax TX.Direct® when your rain clothing becomes saturated with water...
Your rain clothing may become saturated with water simply because it is dirty. Try cleaning it first using Nikwax Tech Wash® and if it is relatively new or recently re-proofed, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be revived simply by cleaning. However, once the garment has become well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax TX.Direct® after the first clean with Nikwax Tech Wash®.
If your rain clothing does not have a moisture-wicking lining, use Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In...
Using the correct proofing product is important. Nikwax TX.Direct® Spray-On is fantastic for a raincoat with a moisture-wicking lining because it provides durable water-repellency (DWR) without compromising the water-wicking properties. However, if moisture-wicking linings are not present, using Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In ensures that you do not miss any spots (complete DWR coverage!) and is easy to apply in the washing machine.

Nikwax TX.Direct® Spray-On is easy and quick to apply and its highly durable water-repellent capability (DWR) develops as it air dries. There is no need for tumble drying, saving energy and protecting more vulnerable, older garments from heat. Nikwax TX.Direct® Spray-On was specially designed and optimised for breathable waterproof garments; it leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres that allows moisture vapours to pass through and maintains breathability. Spray application allows targeted treatment of areas that need it most (for example, elbows and seams on jackets) and does not compromise the properties of internal moisture-wicking linings.
How to use
Apply Nikwax TX.Direct® Spray-On by hand...
For best results, remove all non-washable parts and always clean item(s) first using Nikwax Tech Wash®. There is no need to dry item(s) before proofing.
Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Protect the work surface and place the clean wet secured garment on a flat surface.
- Hold the bottle 15 cm/6 inches away from the garment.
- Apply evenly to the outer side of the fabric.
- Wait 2 minutes. Remove excess product with a damp cloth.
- Carefully check that you have not missed any spots.
Volume guide: These volumes are approximate and depend on the condition of the fabric being treated. Jacket 250 ml; suit 400 ml; trousers 150 ml; gaiters 70 ml
