If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore it is essential to maintain a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric of the jacket to ensure comfort. Over time this wears away and needs to be restored using Nikwax TX.Direct^®.

Waterproof clothing must be breathable...

When we work hard, we sweat. Evaporation of sweat cools us and keeps us comfortable. When it rains, however, we want to avoid getting wet, so we put on a waterproof outer garment to keep us dry. Waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapours to pass through or "breathe", otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, causing overheating and dampness from condensation.

Furthermore, if the outer fabric of the garment absorbs water and becomes "waterlogged", its breathability decreases, causing you to feel clammy and wet.

If your waterproof clothing becomes waterlogged, use Tech Wash and TX.Direct

Your rain clothing may become waterlogged simply because it is dirty. To clean it, use Nikwax Tech Wash and if it is relatively new or recently re-proofed, the durable water-repellent finish (DWR) will be revived simply by cleaning. But when the garment is well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax TX.Direct, always cleaning first with Nikwax Tech Wash.
