Why breathability depends on water-repellency...
Breathable waterproof garments are most likely to perspire and become damp inside when used in wet or damp conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric of the jacket to ensure comfort. Over time it wears away and needs to be restored using Nikwax TX.Direct®.
Waterproof clothing must be breathable...
"When we work hard, we perspire. Evaporation of sweat cools us and keeps us comfortable. When it rains, however, we want to avoid getting wet, so we put on a waterproof outer layer to stay dry. Waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapours to pass through or "breathe", otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, causing overheating and dampness from condensation.
Furthermore, if the outer fabric of the garment absorbs water and becomes "wet", its breathability decreases, causing you to feel clammy and damp.
Nikwax TX.Direct® adds a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish that prevents water absorption whilst maintaining breathability, keeping you dry and comfortable."
Use Nikwax TX.Direct® when your rain clothing absorbs water...
Your rain clothing may absorb water simply because it is dirty. First try cleaning it using Nikwax Tech Wash®, and if it is relatively new or recently re-treated, the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish will be restored simply by cleaning. However, once the garment has become well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax TX.Direct® after the first clean with Nikwax Tech Wash®.
Proper cleaning can be as important as treatment...
Using the correct cleaning product is as important as using the correct DWR treatment. Ordinary detergents leave a thin water-absorbing film on fabrics that masks their water-repellency (DWR). Therefore, always clean your waterproof garments with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Remember that dirt itself works against DWR, so regular cleaning will improve performance.
How Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In protects...
Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In is the market leader. It is easy and quick to apply in the washing machine and its highly durable water-repellent (DWR) capability develops as it air dries. Application in the washing machine ensures that the treatment passes right through the garment, treating seams, tapes and cords as well as fabric. Because there is no need for tumble drying, energy is saved and more vulnerable, older garments are protected from heat. Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In has been specially designed and optimised for breathable waterproof garments; it leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres that allows moisture vapours to pass through and maintains breathability.
How to use
Use Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In in the washing machine...
For best results, remove all non-washable parts and always clean the item(s) first using Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before treatment. Shake well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Remove all detergent residue from the detergent dispenser
- Place a maximum of 2 clean garments in the washing machine.
- Use 100 ml per garment
- Run a synthetic cycle at 30 °C with slow spin
Do not wash clothing in the machine if taped seams have come loose.*
To maintain waterproofing, always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use ordinary detergents.
* On old or worn garments, sometimes faulty taped seams may come loose. After treatment and drying, they can be re-sealed using a patented clear adhesive.
Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In can be applied by hand...
Wear gloves
- Immerse 1 clean garment in 6 l of hand-warm water in a bowl or sink.
- Add 50 ml of TX.Direct®
- Stir, leave for 5–10 minutes and then stir thoroughly.
- Rinse with cold water until the water runs clear
Clothing treated with Nikwax TX.Direct® does not require heat to develop a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish...
- Air dry or tumble dry on a low setting if the care label permits.
