A lighter fails in the cold, and matches in your pack get damp exactly when you need fire the most. There's nothing to break on a ferro rod – metal on metal, and the spark flies. A length of 120 mm means enough material for hundreds of trips.

Burns even when damp

The scraped ferrocerium shaving burns so hot it produces high-temperature sparks that ignite properly prepared tinder even in bad weather, birch bark or petroleum-jelly-soaked cotton. You don't need fuel, gas or a battery – just the striker and a steady hand.

Stands up to rain and wind

The rod works wet, after a fall into a stream and in strong wind, where a lighter's flame stands no chance. The black surface finish protects the material from corrosion during storage.
