The cotton ripstop takes rough treatment and the ruler pocket recalls where the shorts come from. The loose fit rounds off the comfort.
Ripstop that stops the tear
A reinforced yarn is woven into the fabric in a regular grid. When the material catches on something, the tear stops at the nearest grid line and goes no further. That is exactly why ripstop is used for field gear.
