Hardshell Squall - effective protection against rain and snow

The Squall jacket completes the Helikon-Tex range with a state-of-the-art outer layer. What is the difference between a softshell and a hardshell? A softshell jacket (such as the Blizzard jacket) is a soft layer that protects against light wind and drizzle, mainly due to the use of DWR waterproofing. A hardshell, on the other hand, is a sturdier layer that is supposed to provide much greater water resistance while maintaining good breathability. Both of these parameters are combined in the Squall jacket.

Properties of the membrane in the Squall jacket

Waterproofness and breathability at the same time are provided by TorrentStretch®, a 3L (three-layer) laminate developed by Helikon-Tex specialists. Between the stronger outer layer and the integrated lining is a membrane containing micropores. Their dimensions stop water from penetrating inside the jacket. At the same time, they are large enough to effectively wick away moisture (in the form of water vapor) produced by the body. The three layers laminated together form a TorrentStretch® membrane. Hardshell Squall is a membrane jacket with very good waterproofing parameters of 30,000 mm water column.

The key feature, water resistance

The design takes care of all the details valued by hardshell users. The Squall is a full-fledged rain jacket with taped seams and a two-way adjustable hood with a high guard. Additional protection from moisture is provided by waterproof YKK® AquaGuard® zippers, of which the main zipper is two-way and secured at the bottom with a Prym snap. The Squall hardshell jacket has been treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) water repellent coating that is free of harmful PFCs (perfluorocarbons).

How the jacket provides breathability

The basis of a good hardshell is not only water resistance, but also whether the material allows water vapor to move away from the body. The TorrentStretch® membrane, with a breathability of 30,000 g/m2/24h, is responsible for both. Another parameter worthy of attention when choosing a hardshell jacket is the RET evaporation resistance coefficient. This determines the water vapor permeability of the membrane, or breathability. The lower the RET coefficient, the lower the resistance, so the jacket breathes better. The best quality is between 0-6 RET, and the Squall hardshell has <5 RET, which is very good.

Proven ways for better ventilation

Additional breathability is also provided by underarm vents. They provide better ventilation at higher exertion, and help regulate body temperature when needed. Similarly, adjustable Velcro cuffs, and drawstrings: two in the hood, one sewn into the bottom of the jacket. With so many options for adjusting the jacket's fit to the body, it's easy to adjust it to the weather conditions. The jacket is equipped with sturdy Woojin stoppers.

Practical solutions for any weather

The Squall hardshell has been designed to accommodate an additional warming layer (such as the Wolfhound Hoodie jacket) underneath it in winter. This makes the hardshell useful not only as a standalone jacket in the spring, but also as an outer layer for winter expeditions. It has three pockets, of which the two outer ones are placed at chest height so that they do not interfere with the suspenders and chest strap of the backpack. The third pocket was placed inside for documents or a phone. Velcro on the left shoulder will facilitate personalization. In addition, the Squall jacket folded takes up little space. Rolled up, it fits into its own hood.

How to care for a jacket with a membrane

High-tech products require special care to last as long as possible. A membrane jacket should be maintained according to the instructions, so that it does not lose its waterproof and breathability parameters. To strengthen them, it is worth regularly renewing the water repellent coating with DWR impregnant.

What to wear under a hardshell

To be able to take full advantage of the properties of the Squall hardshell jacket, it is necessary to wear under it clothing made of technical materials that support the free transport of moisture. This allows water vapor from the body to escape the jacket efficiently and effectively.
