Headlamps have become a common and indispensable part of the kit not only for households but also for sports enthusiasts, hikers, climbers and outdoor activity fans. They are used by police officers, security services, camping lovers and anglers. The main advantage of headlamps is that they are lightweight, mobile, easy to operate and leave your hands free. Another undeniable advantage is that they shine in the direction you are looking, making every task easier.

Do not underestimate or rush your choice of headlamp. The wrong choice of head torch can result in loss of orientation, battery failure at the most inopportune moment, or ultimately even injury. A quality headlamp can save your life in certain situations.

What purpose do you need the headlamp for?

When choosing a headlamp, you should ask yourself the basic question of what purpose you will use it for. Different demands apply in different situations — for example when rock climbing you need a durable headlamp with adjustable beam both for distance and width, and above all good temperature tolerance. For running and other sports activities you will appreciate a lightweight headlamp that is shock-resistant and has good adjustability on the head so it does not wobble while exercising. Each activity has different requirements, so choose according to the activities you do most frequently. If you cannot decide, choose a universal headlamp suited to a wide range of uses.

Headlamp burn time and lighting modes

Burn time refers to the runtime on new batteries, stated in hours. This figure is indicative and usually depends on the lighting mode in which the headlamp is used. If used in economy mode, the burn time will be extended. Burn time is also affected by weather conditions, as battery efficiency decreases in colder conditions.

Excellent are headlamps where you can switch between lighting modes, letting you choose the one that suits you best. The most economical mode is the flashing light, used mainly for signalling.

Headlamp brightness and beam distance

Headlamp brightness is measured in lumens — the amount of light emitted from it. For home use, a headlamp with a short beam of a few metres and an output of up to 200 lumens is sufficient. For more demanding activities, choose headlamps up to 450 lumens with a beam distance of several tens of metres, while for extreme sports, professionals or rescue operations you need the most powerful models.
